Pablo Bartholomew

Artist / Photographer since 1970 . Pablo Bartholomew is a self-taught photographer and three-time World Press Photo Award winner. In 2013, he was bestowed the Padma Shri by the President of India. In 2014 the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government. His photojournalistic work has been featured in just about every major international publication, like Time, Life, Newsweek, and National Geographic. With over 30 solo exhibitions at galleries, museums, biennales, and photo festivals, internationally and at home, his work is part of prominent art collections globally.

Photographer Pablo Bartholomew's pictures of Calcutta in the 1970s. Escaping on the sets of Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khilari (The Chess Players), it was therapeutic to get away and wander the streets, to feed the inner churning. It was a way of dealing with my own sense of being of mixed origin and of being marginal drove me to explore the Tangra and Dhapa areas of South Calcutta, photographing amongst the Chinese community also a way to look at my mixed Indian and Burmese origins.

In pictures: Mumbai - Chronicles of a past life, 1970s and 80s

Having escaped bureaucratic Delhi, leaving behind my troubled teenage life, I found acceptance in this city not for whose son I was but for my skills and talents and of what use they could be to others. This propelled me to try to find myself both economically and in my work. This exhibition is a way of paying my dues to this city and its people. Often I’d wander aimlessly through the streets hoping to discover its many parts, bit by bit, day by day of this place that came to be called home.

Memento Mori 2016

“Memento Mori” is Bartholomew’s attempt at resurrecting the corpses of his images, albeit fully conscious of their irreversible state of mutation. In enlarging and presenting these ruins, he restores the intimacy and immediacy of their contents while exposing the futility of the human attempt at preservation. In the exhibition of these images, Bartholomew extends the scope of the series to present visual meditations on the fragility of material things and our own selves.

THE NAGAS - PABLO BARTHOLOMEW - Nine Fish Gallery, Mumbai

During World War II, photographer Pablo Bartholomew's father escaped the Japanese from Burma (Myanmar) to India, embarking on a treacherous 30-day journey. The Nagas were among the tribes they encountered, and they were grateful for the food and shelter provided by these fierce headhunters. This quandary drew Pablo back to these people in 1989, sparking a 10-year exploration of the area and the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur.

The Past is the Present - Yangon,Myanmar | Family Photo Workshop

Using my Burmese grandparent's image that I discovered some years ago, the basis of the family album workshop in Yangon, Myanmar (Burma). The culmination was an exhibition of an exploratory workshop designed led by celebrated Indian photographer Pablo Bartholomew delving into personal histories of Myanmar. Working with photo collections provided by the participants themselves, the workshop began a process of researching, recording, and re-imagining personal histories.

Conducting a family photo workshop, working with photo collections provided by the participants themselves, this workshop began a process of researching, recording, and re-imagining personal histories. The people and places shown in family albums, holiday snaps, and private photo collections each tell different, interwoven histories of Nepal. Exploring how the images can be collectively exhibited and new narratives with live first-person accounts at an evening projection session within the city.
