Best pub beer garden

A new kind of pub on the block

The Duke of Greenwich

unveils their take on modern smokehouse pub fare, in possibly Londons best beer garden?

The recently opened independent Duke of Greenwich pub is serving up South London beers, quality smokehouse fare and lively conversation for locals and visitors alike.

The public house. The watering hole. The local. For centuries we’ve flocked to these establishments. Weddings, funerals, an impromptu pint after work, a lazy Sunday afternoon. The pub is the comforting environment where we make memories, dream up big ideas and generally while away the hours. The Duke of Greenwich is no exception.

Tucked away behind Maze Hill station (perfect for the post-commute wind-down), The Duke of Greenwich has been through a few iterations since its opening in 1871. The pub began its life as the Duke of Edinburgh and since then Greenwich residents have seen it rebranded as first The Vanbrugh and now, The Duke of Greenwich.

This is a local in the truest sense of the word. Instead of quiz nights or playing sports on the TV, our customers can expect to walk in spontaneously and receive a warm welcome and a chat. The Duke of Greenwich thrives on the conversations that take place inside.

The 150-cover venue has both indoor and outdoor seating, including a separated dining area for those who wish to book ahead for a meal. When the UK is graced with the first day of ‘pub garden weather’ look no further - the leafy, high-walled garden at The Duke of Greenwich has more than enough room for dates, groups, families and even our furry friends (who can expect a treat or two!). For comfort and convenience the garden includes an outdoor bar serving up pints and Aperol Spritz. But if the weather takes a turn then fear not! Take cover inside and get cosy under the skylight listening to the rain while you quench your thirst with your favourite tipple.

Taking the spotlight in the garden though, is  the handmade, bespoke fire cage BBQ and smoker. Quality food is the heart of the Duke of Greenwich and the irresistible smell of charcoal will draw you into our secret garden. The long burn time of our Marabu coals means that we can nurture the flavour of our dishes with care, whether it’s a whole chicken or a single leek.

Our food is treated with the highest respect. We butcher our meat on site and we partner only with trusted premium suppliers. Rare breed meats come to us courtesy of the Lyons Hill Farm in Dorset, our fish will be caught in the early hours of the morning before coming to us from the Wright Brothers in Cornwall, and seasonal vegetables are sent fresh from farmers across the south of England thanks to Shrub Provisions. There is care and precision taken in choosing our ingredients. This is NOT your average pub food. Customers will never see us serving up a questionable lasagne, damp nachos or dry nuggets. Instead you will find an eclectic menu of sumptuous barbecue sharing dishes served up on sustainable bamboo plates making our garden the place to be this summer!

As an independent pub, the Duke of Greenwich is all about supporting other local businesses. You can find our Duke house lager on tap, brewed just down the road by Signal Brewery. In fact it’s so close that the beer you are sipping on a Friday night could have been freshly brewed only 24 hours before! We also feature an IPA and a Pale Ale from Brew by Numbers, also in Greenwich, as well as venturing further across South London for various other lagers and ciders. For the wine lovers, we have a diverse range of choices by the glass or bottle and you can expect to see a cocktail menu and low and no alcohol drinks from us soon.

So make your way down to your new favourite local, The Duke of Greenwich. The BBQ is smoking and the conversation is on fire!
